Training for Climbing

Last night, I took a Training for Climbing class at the climbing gym, Great Western Power Co- Touchstone Climbing in Oakland, CA.

Today, just my hips are sore, and I've never had that experience before. In the class, we did all sorts of crazy moves that involved hip twisting. One move was called 'driving the bus'. You sit like you are about to do a Russian Twist, and then you grab a yoga block with your feet. When the instructor yells "drive the bus left", you turn your hips left. When the instructor yells "drive the bus right", you turn your hips right. What else? We did a lot of variations on the plank by sliding our feet across the floor with slippery pads. We did a lot of Frog Crunches, Leg Lifts, Sit-ups and did a move called the "Eggshell". In the eggshell you take your elbows and you crunch so that your elbows touch your legs. Then your partner takes you by the ankles and moves you from left to right and up and down. Your goal is to keep your legs with your elbows and not break form. It's a great partner exercise and hard to do!

You look like the woman below, but somebody is grabbing at your ankles.

Apart from my sore hips, I can't believe how trendy Oakland has gotten. It's filled with youngsters, who are hip and ready to kick ass. On Monday night, the climbing gym was packed and Down Town Oakland was filled with law abiding citizens. It's weird. I had an exhilarating time biking from my parents house to the gym, but during the whole time that I was riding, I could not believe that I was in in Oakland. I don't even know how much I can break the law anymore, it's crazy.

After my class, I took a shower. (My parent's shower needs work) And then I went to see an old adviser of mine at the Bay Grape. It just happened that her Birthday was that day and cam e to wish her a good birthday. I was treated to a glass of wine, and more importantly the pleasure of her company. It was a pleasant evening, indeed.

Rizzmic

I am embarrassed to say that Rizzmic is my favorite class at the parks and recreation center. Yesterday, I went to Rizzmic, and before the workout my blood pressure was a high 127/70 with 60 beats per minute. 1 minute after my workout, my blood pressure was 117/66 and 71 beats per minute. Blood pressure rises and falls, I'm attributing my high blood pressure to the fact that I felt slightly sick that day, and my body was working overtime to try to make me feel better. Other than that, I'm not worried.

The class was a blast, and I had a ton of fun. I'm embarrassed to say this, but the rizzmic dance that I liked the most was Bottom of the River by Delta Rae.

I don't like the music video much, but I do love the song.

Ouick Workout Update

Ok, lets so a quick workout post. I went to bootcamp today, and before my workout my blood pressure was predictably 117/ 67 with 73 beats per minute, and post my workout my blood pressure was 123/67 with 87 beats per minute. The workout move that I found most challenging was the one legged row, and of course the most interesting was some TRX move that I don't know how to describe. Anyways, my workout went pretty smooth given that my stomach has been upset for the last couple of days. So, I look forward to more workouts and maybe someday I'll take a TRX class.

Healthy Blood Pressure (Workout Journal)

This Journal Entry was made on December 18th, 2015. The date that it gets posted is going to be later.

Before I went to Bootcamp on Friday, my blood pressure was 106/74bpm and after my workout, about 5 minutes and 22 seconds (because of a stretching), my blood pressure was 124/67 and 85 beats per minute. The hard exercises were the reverse crunch and the normal pushup. The fun workout was the Trx oblige crunch.

As much as I enjoy seeing my blood pressure in the normal range, it seems inaccurate to me. Either the machine is off or there is some thing off about me.

Work-Out Plans (Workout Journal)

I haven't been working out, and I've been trying to find new ways of doing so. I tried running while taking pictures.

In total, I was out for 40 minutes and only went 2.6 miles. The implication is that, I didn't run much. However, I did enjoy myself, being out was good for my soul and I ended up with some interesting pictures, like the picture below.

It looks paranormal, but in actuality, it's my breath. After running, I exhaled as I took this picture and didn't realize it. Looking at this picture, you really get a sense why it's so important to stay hydrated. All that water vapor that escapes when you exhale, it is water that is lost.
Apart from running, I went to a couple of classes at the gym. To motivate myself, I've been taking my blood pressure before and after class. Having this habit really makes the experience more of a ritual and generating numbers produces data I can dwell on.

On Monday, I went to a boot camp class, and before the class, my blood pressure was 119/66 with 61 beats per minute. About 37 minutes after my workout, my blood pressure was 130/79 and my heart was beating at 101 beats per minute. I had to leave the workout early because I was worried about getting to work on time. The hard movements for me was the TRX style tricep extensions and the lunging with an overhead weight. My favorite workout was the kettle bell pass between the legs. It's just fun to swing around a weight.

On Tuesday, I went to the Tabata class again. Before class my blood pressure was a shocking low of 114/66 with 60 beats pet minute. Truly surprising, given that I just had a cup of coffee, and then after class, my blood pressure was 107/65 with 76 beats per minute. This measurement was taken about 3 minutes and 50 seconds after I stopped working out. For the Tabata class I found the weighted jump lunges, the weighted bicycles and the weighted arm rotations to be very difficult. In fact, I altered the weighted bicycles movement during the workout because my lower back started aching. I suspect that ache originated from poor form.

One last thing, exhaling while utilizing my muscles and breathing in on the rest has helped me at least psychologically, while working out. I'm trying to form a habit of it, because on average, I feel less panic stricken when I have a system for breathing.

So that is my personal update on working out. I'm amazed by how much detail I've managed to muster up on the subject. Above is a rabbit I spotted on my run.

Getting in Shape (Workout Journal)

Last Tuesday, I took a Tabata class at the local recreation center, and let me tell you, it kicked my ass. After class, I slept for an hour and was sore for 3 days. That class was a real wake up call. My new profession is having a toll on my overall physical health. I'm too stationary throughout the day, and I'm losing strength and physical aptitude.

So, I'm going to try to improve this. In some sense, the biggest indication that I'm getting out of shape is the fact that I don't want to move anymore. I feel like I'm not genuinely excited by my gym classes. In the past, it used to be a source of excitement and something that I genuinely looked forward to. Now, working out feels like a necessary chore.

I also want to get more technical about working out than I have in the past. The biggest reason for this is that I want to be able to get people to workout with me, and I want to ensure people's safety as they workout with me. I want to take up a mantle of authority, so I can convince people to play with me. Crazy, isn't it?

Anyways, the first thing I'm doing is that I'm taking my blood pressure reading at the recreation center before and after my workout. On that day of the Tabata, I only got a blood pressure reading after class, my blood pressure was 117/ 72 90bpm The hard movements were Fire Hydrant Movement and Side Plant with Leg lift (It was hard but I enjoyed 180 burpees and crisscross squat jump)

Today, I took a bootcamp class and before my class my blood pressure was 135/73 or 124/68 74bpm and after class it was 128/65 96bpm that was timed at 1 minute and 30 seconds after the workout had finished. Anyways, the only was I'm going to imporve is to embrace both my social and nerdy side. That's the only way.
